”Sunday Sketching“ by Christoph Niemann

Netflix launched a new original documentary series, Abstract: The Art of Design two months ago; each programme introduces the creative process and work of different designers, artists, and architects. The first episode is produced by Oscar Awarded director Morgan Neville. It focus on a Berlin based illustrator, artist and author Christoph Niemann, his inspirations and creative process.

Christoph Niemann’s illustrations have appeared in many publications, and on the covers of New Yorker, WIRED and the New York Times. Feeling the need to break out of his routine, he started the “Sunday Sketching” project. Every Sunday he would randomly select an everyday object like a post note, brush or a hammer, and put it on a blank piece of paper. He would then create an illustration by drawing around the object. He never knew what he was going to draw, however, in his drawings he would go on to turn a brush into a dancer, a post note into a piece of carpet, and a hammer into a football player’s golden leg.

“Sunday Sketching” is an exercise in seeing for Niemann – each of the drawings show his clever wit and charming sense of humour. His documentary is truly inspiring and would motivate anyone to pick up a pen.
